In response to the unrelenting humanitarian crisis in Gaza, 4000 Records has curated a collection of (mostly) previously unreleased music with the singular purpose to raise funds to help people who lack access to enough food, shelter and medical care.
The conflict in the Middle East has unearthed an enormous weight of complex historical and social issues. Media coverage, analysis and opinion so quickly strays into the weeds making it near-impossible to feel anything but powerless. Yet despite this weight, and despite distance and relative privilege, we see solidarity in our communities. They unite, using the power they do have, to protest the humanitarian crisis that exists because of this conflict. Some will rally, some will petition politicians, some will boycott companies to oppose their involvement, some will directly amplify the voices of the victims of this conflict, and some will make Art.
Music has the power to unite, transform, and bond us to a common cause. The artists on this compilation subscribe to a stance of non-violence and anti-war, and believe in the sanctity of an innocent life, and present these works in that context. As such, 100% of all funds generated from this collection will be donated to MAP (Medical Aid for Palestinians).
The cover art, capturing the Mediterranean Sea, was taken by Tessa Fox on expired Kodak Portra 35mm with a Canon A1, in 2022.
“Water in itself, is used as a weapon of war, not just due to its use and necessity for drinking and hygiene, but also the resources within it to be reaped such as salt and gas,” says Fox. “For years now, after living in Palestine, I have approached the sea differently. I urge you to as well. The sea, the ocean, rivers, waterfalls, springs, wells, hydration, sanitation, cooking, fishing, minerals, are all a privilege to hold when from some they are stolen, colonised, weaponised, leaving the rightful caretakers dispossessed. When you next reach the sea, enter full of gratitude, embrace its healing and breathe in deeply the crystal air.”
