ff8282 has long been a solo project dedicated to expansive spaces, purposeful ambience & melancholic musical arrangements. On their latest album, taunt_taunt, April Emily has blended these concepts with an even greater outcome of precision & melody, ensuring the songs not only serve themselves within their own context, but in the vast emotional depths of the listener.
The creation of this album spread across most of 2026, and largely consisted of dozens of song re-arrangements, re-writing, and recording in different spaces around Meanjin until the final LP reflected more as a diary of heartache and shy optimism of the outside world rather than of internal independence. April also returned to the instrument that first connected them with music; the guitar. Across the entire project its feature is clear, although often understated in the effect of noise & atmosphere. Guitar swells reminiscent of Stars of the Lid can be heard throughout, as can sustaining leads & strong sections heavily influenced by groups like Sigur Rós. As usual April is trying to accomplish the unspoken challenge in ambient – to say as much as you can without speaking a word.
